Happy Mother's Day | Leighton DaCosta, Charleston Portrait Photographer

First off, Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there. I hope it was a great one.

My mom, circa 1983

You know, one of the things that we lose sight of with modern technology is how many pictures and memories we keep in our digital devices. Mobile phones, tablets, computers, data bases, and other locations. But a few weeks ago, when my uncle asked me if I had any photos of my mom so that he could show someone at a reunion, I realized that all of the images I had of my mother were only in prints.

You see, my mom passed of cancer back in 1997. Before my first digital camera, lap top, or even my first cell phone. I have Polaroids, and snap shots that go back to the 1950s and ‘60s, but nothing that I could look at every day in my phone or on my computer. I’m OK with that though.

My challenge, is that I am the youngest of three brothers and both my brothers have all the prints 8x10 and larger. While he “baby” of the family seems to get all the special treatment, very rarely do they get the best of the special heirlooms such as albums and the framed pictures. I have lots of fond memories of my mother, but I worry that I will not be able to share them with future generations.

The great thing about today, is that we have options!

My Wife and Son on a Snow Day. Charleston, SC (Jan 2018)

I have made a consistent effort to not only take photos of my son, but to have photos of him interacting with the both of us. His mom is absolutely amazing and the perfect mother and wife. I want him to be able to look back and access these memories whenever he wants.

Currently I’m working on a “First 5 Years” album for my son, that my hope, is much appreciation 50 years from now when he is sharing these images with HIS grandkids. Similar to wedding albums, we can create our family heirlooms now, to pass down to generations later.

I hope you all got to spend time with your family, and remember all those who are no longer with us.

What heirlooms have you created to pass down to your future generations?

Please share in the comments.
